The Art of Letter Writing
January 6, 2016
I write letters. I write hand written letters. I remember passing notes in school. Meeting a boy at camp and becoming pen pals with him. Still to this day, there is something about putting pen to paper that helps me open up. I take time to reflect and express from that space of clarity. I mostly have written letters to past loves in my adult life. I have to admit those letters haven’t always been full of romance. They certainly were my honest emotions delivered with passion. I love sending and leaving unexpected love notes. I love the connection it creates.
I wish the Art of Love Letters would return. When I was a kid, my Dad used to leave us happy face notes on paper plates when he’d leave for work. Every morning they were there waiting when we woke up with there simple and beautiful wishes for a great day! He wasn’t a guy that that expressed his emotions in a gentle way otherwise. Perhaps that is when this expression became something I view as a way to say I love you.
I encourage you to send a letter to someone you love. It can be your significant other, a friend, a parent, anyone who has touched your heart. Tell them of their beauty, how the way they smile lights up the room, wish them a great day and any other thing that you may have been thinking and haven’t taken the time to express. Mail it to them. Mail it even if you live together. It’s so easy to brighten someone’s day with this simple gesture that will be remembered for years to come. It warms my heart just thinking about it.
